Is it right for you?

The specialist makes the final decision after your consultation. If ESG is not right for you, you pay nothing for the procedure.

A good fit if

  • Your BMI is roughly 30–38
  • Diets and medication have not given lasting results
  • You want a meaningful result without surgery or scars
  • You need to be back at work within a few days
  • You are ready to follow a nutrition plan for 12 months

Probably not for you if

  • You have had previous stomach surgery
  • You have a large hiatal hernia or an active stomach ulcer
  • You are pregnant or planning pregnancy in the next year
  • You have an untreated eating disorder
  • Your BMI is 40+ (surgery usually works better, see the gastric sleeve)

How it works

What actually happens, in plain words.

Under general anaesthesia

You sleep through it. A flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth into the stomach, so there are no cuts on the skin.

Stitched from the inside

Full-thickness sutures fold the stomach into a narrow tube, reducing its volume by about 70%.

Nothing is removed

The stomach keeps all of its tissue and digests food normally. You simply feel full on much smaller portions.

Home the same day

After 2–3 hours of observation in the day clinic you rest in your own hospital room with your nurse close by.

Eating and recovery

Your dietitian gives you a written plan for every phase.

Before

1 week of liquids

A short liquid diet before the procedure makes it safer and easier.

Weeks 1–4

Liquid diet

Protein shakes, broths and thin soups while the stitches settle.

Weeks 5–6

Soft foods

Puréed and soft foods in small portions, chewed slowly.

Month 2+

Normal, smaller meals

Regular healthy food. Your dietitian checks in remotely for 12 months.

Realistic results

A 110 kg person can typically expect to lose about 16–22 kg. ESG works best together with the nutrition plan; the follow-up is there to keep you on track.

The honest risks

Every medical procedure has risks. Here they are, without the small print.

Common and usually short-lived

  • Bloating, cramps and nausea in the first days
  • Sore throat from the endoscope
  • Tiredness for a few days

Rare but serious

  • Bleeding
  • Stitches loosening, which can reduce the effect
  • Reaction to anaesthesia

ESG has a lower complication rate than surgery. All risks are explained by the specialist before you give consent.

One price, everything included

Questions people ask

Is ESG permanent?

The stitches are designed to stay. The stomach can stretch over time if old eating habits return, which is why the 12-month nutrition follow-up is included.

Can I have a gastric sleeve later?

Yes. Because nothing is removed, ESG does not rule out surgery later if you ever need it.

Will I have scars?

No. Everything is done through the mouth, so there are no cuts on the skin.

When can I fly home?

Usually 1–2 days after the procedure, once the doctor has seen you. Most people fly home on day 5.

When can I go back to work?

Most people return to desk work after 2–3 days. Avoid heavy lifting and intense exercise for about 2 weeks.

Can I claim the cost back?

In some EU/EEA countries and Norway the state may reimburse part of the cost. See the country guide →
